Original Rigby Rifle. What is this?
One of the hunters who visited us this week, brought a delightful original Rigby rifle in .275 Rigby (7x57) to hunt with. He hunted very successfully, despite the somewhat antiquated scope, which is mounted in very high QD mounts and has a very thick post as a reticle.
Now the question. On the comb of the stock is a round brass insert. The hole in the insert is threaded. Does anyone know what this is for?
My guess would be that is for adding a cheek piece to elevate ones eye to the level of the scope but this is just that, a wild guess.

What a beaut T! I'v never seen that setup but you may well be right. Contact James Dunlop thru SA Wingshooters (don't have his contact no) - he is the current importer of Rigby products and has wealth of knowledge.
Edit to add: If the scope mounts are see-through then it makes sense to have an '"ádjustable comb" when using the iron sights.

Re: Original Rigby Rifle. What is this?
Great. Lovely to see a fine rifle like that in the field and working so well. Those older scopes weren't variables so it is difficult to get good focus/sight picture with them. I would guess the piggie was a reasonably close shot hence the choice of iron sights. Shows that he knows his rifle well too!

Nice! Good combo for when you are out after kudu (or stag) and a piggie (or boar) jumps up at 50m so no time to take off scope
