    Default Scope on a muzzleloader

    Hi there,

Anyone out there got any advise as to how I could get a scope to fit onto my Lyman Great Plains Rifle.

I know its not traditional but my eyesight is bad and I am battling to see the target at 100m

Will I have to drill and tap the top of the barrel? How much of a mission is this and how safe is it? (won't it weaken the wall of the barrell?)

Anyone with any experience or insight?

    Regards,

    Anton.

    Hi Anton
No big problem. Biggest mission is to find the correct bases to fit onto the barrel. I have scoped my Ardesa Deerhunter with great success. As for the drilling and tapping no big issue either. But if you are also one of the "lucky guys" with 10 thumbs just take the rifle to a good gunsmith and have the bases fitted. Normally the barrels are thick enough to be drilled and tapped.

I found a Lynx mount that I narrowed down to 13mm. after drilling and tapping I fittted a Tasco long eye relief scope. works!

this was done on a Lyman .50. best of luck :)

There's another way: get a gunsmith, or someone with some machining knowledge to mill four dovetails into the barrel. These will go into the thick part of the barrel wall (assuming it is an octagonal barrel). Then you can use a normal clamp on base/ring arrangement. Try using a long eye relief scope, so you don't have to modify the hammer. Find this preferrable over drilling into the barrel.
