Quite normal, the blast from any "Magnum" revolver is going to hurt, even if its just one shot
Those simple plugs (with the string between) are just the thing for that final stalk.
I usually wear them under my muffs when shooting, but in the field, for that one or two shots they work well enough

Since you pretty much have to have a pro hunter with you anyway, who will have a big rifle, it's not as if you were taking Kodiak bear by yourself, as Peterson, of Guns and Ammo magazine did, with his .44. He was backed into a little slit in the alders, when a huge bear walked past him, out in the stream. Pete put a steel clad Norma 240 gr fp behind its foreleg and it collapsed within 20 yds.
