Default The Cost of Biltong Hunting (2014)

Perhaps I am looking for trouble,

but what do you regard as a reasonable price to pay for hunting a
    • Eland
    • Gemsbok
    • Kudu
    • Blesbok
    • Rooibok
    • Springbok
    • Warthog

I know that prices are often based on Region as some animals do better in some areas and often farms also offset the cost of accommodation, guides, vehicles on the hunting fee.

I often look at the prices (trophy none the less) advertised on hunting farm websites and think that at those prices the art of hunting (for the average South African) is going to die a slow death and the only species being targeted is the paper pages at the range.

    Eland - which type? R10 000 - R12 000
    Gemsbok - R3500 - R4500
Kudu ? I'm paying R5000 this season for bulls.
    Blesbok R1000 - R1200
    Rooibok R1000 - R1200
    Springbok - R650 - R850

But that's just my view. On a previous thread it was stated that what ever you're willing to pay is a fair price.

There aren't really farms that advertise their biltong prices online. Websites are for foreigners.

Go look on a website like ibookdirect for some contact details and email the farms, since the pricelists on the website are probably 5 years old. The potshot website did a atricle on hunting prices about 2 years ago that listed some pricing from survey data.

It seems the location of the farm is often a major factor with animal pricing. Some farms close to Pretoria will charge R2k for an impala, where you will probably pay R700-R1000 in the alldays area. Work the price of fuel into the hunting trip pricing, and final cost is about the same if you're on limited time and only shoot 1 impala.
