Default What is required if you want to start a shooting range?

Is there anywhere that I can find info on what criteria is needed before you can turn some open ground into a shooting range? I'm interested in the guidelines and the laws here. Probably never going to need them, but I do have an uncle that has the prefect spot IMO, but its in the Eastern Cape.

What is wrong with the Eastern Cape? hpy71

There are SABS standards for accreditation for a range as to be used in accredited training. I would say that this could give you some guidance on the matter.

Corne, I've lived there for 25 years, its not that bad, except for the wind and... did I mention the wind.

Its just that fun shoot thing got me thinking, and that it's a bit out the way for most of the members on here. confused0083

It wouldn't be a training range, just a fun shoot every now and then, but I assume there is restrictions on this too. I'll check out the SABS info and see what the score is.

Craig, I have only been down in this part of the world since November 2007 and I have experienced the wind....but I enjoy it in PE. I hear what you say regarding the range. I think the SABS standards for a accredited range would give you some idea. I think that the main things would be if it is within municipal boundaries or not. If it is within municipal boundaries you will most properly have to get permission as you are not allowed to discharge a firearm within municipal boundaries. If it is somewhere on a farm I do not think there is to much to be concerned about other than sufficient backstops and safe distance away from inhabited areas and roads. I would say that contacting the local police will also be a good point to start at and asking them what they would require.

Found this on the SAPS website. Thought you might find it interesting.

    Thanks Bla. hpy180

I now know why people charge range fees.
