The rifle looks like a cut open RSA. The action is a single shot RSA target action, cut open at the top and bottom and fitted with a magazine. At a time, these were the standard Musrgave rifles. Later they also used other actions.
It will shoot both 7,62x51 and 308Win just fine. Despite the calibre designation, they likely used a 308Win chamber reamer.
Fit and finish should be top notch. If in good condition, your rifle should have decent value. Do not be tempted to have it "improved".

Looks like a Vrystaat MkII. 308 (although it says 7.62) with 26" barrel. how "far up" is the 2nd group of serial numbers? Mine is in the high 500's and was bought new by my father in 1972. Please post pics of the complete rifle.

A-R, if it's a Vrystaat, it's was designed as is, and not a cut open RSA. IIRC the RSA single shot was actually a development of the Vrystaat.

Yes, most likely a Vrystaat Model. Hard to tell from the limited pics. The mod 2000 was similar IIRC?

Yes, The "sporting" version was indeed a different, but closely related design. However, in the manufacturing process, both would have started as the same billet with different amounts of steel getting cut away. Hence my "cut open" comment. No, I did not try to imply that a target action was converted to sporter configuration after manufacture. My apologies if it came out wrong.

The second numbers are 250 from memory ..rifle is not with me..what i do see is thar the groofs are pretty shallow righy through the barrel..the begining is not more worn than the front tip of the barrel compared to my new Tikkas. when I cleaned the barrel with a brush cloth and boretec it came out very shiney with no matks in it. Does this infucate its still in good working condition ?

It is a South African site, but it is frequented by plenty of international folks, who don't do Afrikaans. And yes, it's part of the forum rules (check your welcome email).
